Kerepek Ubi Pedas Basah 500g

$14.95

Kerepek Ubi Pedas Basah 500g

Crunchy, spicy, sweet and wonderfully sticky — Kerepek Ubi Pedas Basah is the kind of Malaysian snack that delivers a little bit of everything in every bite.

Thin slices of ubi kayu (cassava) are fried until crisp before being coated in a rich pedas basah style chilli seasoning. Unlike ordinary dry-seasoned cassava chips, pedas basah gives the kerepek a more intense coating, combining chilli heat, savoury flavour and a delicious sweet stickiness around that unmistakable cassava crunch.

It’s bold, messy in the best possible way, and very Malaysian.

What Is Kerepek Ubi?

Kerepek ubi simply means cassava chips in Malay.

Cassava — commonly known as ubi kayu in Malaysia — has long been part of everyday cooking throughout Southeast Asia. The starchy root can be boiled, steamed, made into traditional kuih or sliced thinly and fried into wonderfully crisp kerepek.

Over generations, kerepek became a familiar Malaysian snack, particularly in kampung communities and small home-based food businesses, where different families and makers developed their own seasonings and recipes.

You’ll find everything from simple salted kerepek ubi to versions flavoured with chilli, spices and sweet-savoury coatings.

What Does “Pedas Basah” Mean?

This is where things get interesting.

Pedas means spicy, while basah means wet in Malay.

Rather than simply dusting the finished chips with dry chilli powder, the pedas basah style coats them with a richer chilli mixture, giving each piece a more intensely seasoned, slightly sticky character.

The combination is wonderfully addictive: first comes the crispy cassava crunch, followed by sweetness, savouriness and finally that satisfying chilli heat.

It’s a very different experience from an ordinary packet of potato chips.

A Classic Malaysian Kerepek Tradition

In Malaysia, kerepek isn’t reserved for any particular time of day.

It’s the snack sitting on the table when relatives come over. It’s something to munch on while watching television, something brought along for a long drive and something that mysteriously disappears once the packet has been opened.

Kerepek also has a special place during festive periods such as Hari Raya, when homes traditionally fill their tables with biscuits, kuih and jars of different crunchy snacks for visiting family and friends.

And while there are countless varieties, kerepek ubi remains one of the classics.

How Malaysians Enjoy It
